The Fatal News
I wake up to a sharp buzzing sound, not one that is quiet but
one that is fast paced and loud. The only thing I can compare it too is the
sound of hummingbird knocking on my window and the feeling of a hummingbird
knocking on my brain. I turn over to my
alarm system mounted into the wall next to the bed and quickly see BREAKING
NEWS tears across the screen in big, bold red letters. As I unlock my account
with finger recognition I immediately ask Siri II, my personal computer
intelligence assistant, what has happened. She responds rapidly stating that a
new strain of Ebola has been uncovered and is spreading quickly. To keep safe,
she continues, one must wash their hands at least 5 times a day. I immediately
prompt her to pull up relevant articles on my computer, which I quickly begin
reading. As head of the CDC, I know I am
in for a long ride ahead, immediately I ask her to send out a mass email to all
of the heads declaring a state of emergency. Within minutes, responses begin to
pop up on my computer and phone. I walk
to my television, clap my hands and say what I want, and the news comes on.
Though I search meticulously for the words “new strain of Ebola” to pop up on
the screen, the word has not reached the public yet, and there is still time to
think of our next step. The buzzing begins to start up again and I walk back
over to my computer. Siri II begins to read my emails asking if she should
respond. As I scroll through the emails on my touchscreen computer, I begin to
formulate the responses. It is most definitely going to be a long night.
